Has anyone gone to these schools? i just started researching into them, I want to turn wrenching on motorcycles into a career, because i'm tired of waiting tables and at least ill be doing something with my life that i love. So anything you know about these schools, alternative schools, or anything else, post it here!
Ummm neither. Motorcycle techs don't make that much. It'll take years to pay off that 20k bill that WY-U-A-TECH or UTI will give you.
+1 The only people that make money are the private guys but then that's a risky investment in tools, etc. You can invest into a lot of better schools in a different industry that pay off more in the future. -Cody
Go to sac city college they have a great program and you can also get an AS deg there wich is worth way more than a cert from some tech school. find a small shop that will let you sweep up. You will learn 100 times more from the old guys in a shop than you ever will at school.
Yes, as PHREEK says, you do learn a lot more from guys at a shop. When I was 20, I knew more than the guys coming in fresh out of Wyotech. It's just a waste. Plus, most brand names have their own certification program
I like wrenching as a hobby but if you want to trade school at least do something like industrial electrics. The training is shorter and there are always jobs out there. Plus tools are cheaper, money is 25 times better plus you're pretty clean at the end of the day. Working in the motorcycle industry is a cut throat business, like working at car dealers. Mechs are flat rate and it's very competitive
I have intimate knowledge on this subject , dont go to either for what you are looking to do for a couple reasons: A: The price tag B: Neither of the locations here local do MC training. The closest MC specific trade school I know of is in fremont ( and its a wyotech campus ) C: Go to ARC or one of the other local JC's and take some classes for a couple reasons, one you will be able to see if you REALLY wanna do it, two you can find out if you can apply yourself in that environment well enough to get something out of the classes. Now, on the subject of trade schools in general, trade schools are fine IF YOU APPLY AND PUSH YOURSELF <- this is key. Any for profit school is exactly that, for profit. Meaning it is REALLY HARD to fail, they want you to pass as they want to get paid. I see people go through trade programs for all sorts of stuff and it usually falls into this breakout: for a 40 person class you will typically have: 5 students that get it because they bust their asses and push themselves, in turn the instructors push them harder because they have the ability to take it and learn more. These are the guys that get the kick ass jobs 10-15 that are your mid grade student, these guys dont have the drive they need to really go above and beyond, and while they will leave the school with the ability to get an entry level position and pick up the rest on the job, they are spending alot of money to get into a spot that wont pay very well for a while but it does get them in the door. The last 20 ish - these guys are there and dont have drive and "float". Meaning , they do the bare minimum. They dont push themselves and in turn dont really learn anything. With the structuring of for profit schools they get through, get a cert. or diploma depending on the schooling and then get pissed that they "didnt learn anything" . Usually the people who are burn outs or living at home and the parents said that they had to do some schooling or get out fall into here. so the key is, Trade schools are fine if you really push yourself. Yes they do cost more than the JC counterparts but they are immersion schools and if you actually have the right mindset you can leave with a TON of knowledge and setup to get a good job. However, if you have the time ( the trade schools are usually faster than JC's ) go to a JC, you can get more out of it and they will fail the idiots so you dont have to deal with them in class as they have already collected the money for their units up front and the money isnt as much of an issue. and yes, I work at one of the listed schools, went to one myself years ago ( in the computer field, and got a 70K a year job fresh out, I was motivated, too bad the comp industry fell apart and I moved on ) so I do really see this stuff daily. if you have any ??'s drop me a line.
