Well i been thinking of trying to find a new job. Wife is having a real hard time finding work for herself (even trying temps). The job i have at the moment pays ok i have job security and seniority. I been offered better paying jobs dong the same thing (tow truck operator) but really don't know if i want to keep doing it cause there's really no future in it. I have a back ground in mechanics, towing, warehouse, and injection molding technician/plant maintenance. I was looking at a few county jobs but wonder if its a good time to try out for them or am i asking to get laid off??? How is the county doing right now job wise? I think it would be nice if i could get some good benifits.

My thought is stick to where you are safe... I know its wearing on you but tough it out for a bit until the economy is in better shape. Just imagine how stressed you'd be to be laid off from the county or other job?

Your seniority is a savior for you. Play it safe for now.

Depends on what department/division of the County you are looking at. I am a supervisor for County and my department is doing fine. Try looking into treatment plant operator or mechanical maintenance. Some Public Works departments are hurting (always will) because they are funded by the "General Fund" and are usually one of the first to go when money gets tight. Any County job that is "fund generated" like Water, Sewer, Garbage, and Storm Drain departments do much better in financial hard times. We actually just hired a few and are about to hire more. Some of the new hires are temps but its a great way to get your foot in the door.

More than 1 in 10 Californians are unemployed right now. In this economy, if you have a job AND job security you are WAY ahead of the game.

i have been unemployed for a year and a half already after working in a cabinet shop for 10 straight years...i would stick it out there unless your dream job falls in your lap. looking for other work never hurts, but risking security on a roll of the dice isn't advised at this time.

    just my 2 cents

You might find something you qualify for and are interested in. Once in the Civil Service system, you're pretty much set with job security and retirement.

    Best of luck.

Well I am filling out a application for watter treatmant assistant maintnace position and was not sure if its a
what I should do but then again if it did not work out I know many tow companys that would hire me but I risk
loosing all I have worked for here. I just don't get good benifits retirement etc where I am now and with the
wife not working I feel there's more pressure on me to make things right.
