Duh, I spelled brakes wrong in the title ... anyway...A little while ago I changed my rear brake pads. All went well and the brakes work great, but I noticed a tiny little squeak when I press the rear brake. I was hoping it would work its way out, but the squeak has gotten louder. What causes them to squeal like that? Lookin' for suggestions.
wipe down the rotor (denatured alcohol, electrical contact cleaner, or similar solvent) remove brake pads and scuff the braking surface a bit with some fine grit sandpaper
It is not uncommon for brakes to squeak these days. When asbestos was removed from the manufacturing process, brake pads had to change to organic type materials, with this came squeaking. You can clean with brake friendly solvents or blow away the dust as best you can, but it will likely return to squeaking. Next time you need brakes you might try a different brand and get better results, or of course it could be worse. This is all said with the assumption that there is nothing else wrong, ie: warped rotors or sticky calipers. Brakes are important, so if you don't have experience, it might be best to have a shop look at them. My 2 cents
I've heard wave rotors tend to assist with this problem as they evacuate the brake dust better. My choice would be clean and scuff first though.
No brakes should squeak, squeaking is not normal. when you put the pads on did you lube the pin/slides?
I need to scuff the pads!! I bet that's the answer right there because I didn't do it. Thanks for the advise gentlemen. I'll work on it this weekend and let you know how it turns out. This is why I like this forum, plenty of people to help out.
