According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov), California’s unemployment rate (a/o Nov 09) is 12.3% - #2 worst in the nation along with Nevada, and South Carolina (Michigan was #1 at 14.7 percent). Times are tough. The job market is in a horrible state. People across the nation - families – are struggling to make ends meet after layoffs from corporate cutbacks. Unlike some late night hosts with $40B severance pay packages waiting for them, many of us are forced to dig into our savings and drastically alter our quality of life during this depressed period.

Statistics show that most jobs are filled by word of mouth, internal hiring/posting… in other words “who you know”. Successful networking is the most critical component to the job search process. So I thought that it might be helpful for us to create a more robust Networking section in SCR. I know there is an “Employment” area, but it only had 2 posts! My idea is to create an area broken out by specialties (Health Care, Business, Engineering, Arts, Technical Fields, etc) – another resource for job seekers and employers… and SCR networking project if you will.

I will be out of a job come August this year and have been very involved with the necessary and increasingly frustrating process of finding my next career. With the highest unemployment rate since the 1940s, it makes it harder for all of us who are in this position. I will review the current openings in my organization and post as soon as I can. Maybe I can help someone find a job… maybe someone can help me down the road.

    Thoughts?

    I'm in Health Care BTW...

    Chief929,
There are entry-level position in the health records management section, but this is a good way to get into the civil-service system (federal job). Also, position(s) in appointments booking, entry-level as well. Nothing currently in managed care (federal side), but I will check with our Managed Care Contractor (TriWest) to see if they have any Service Center requirements at this time.

You can PM me more detail if you want to pursue. Do you have any coding background?

I'm not sure that several different sub forums would be necessary. Either one "Networking" subforum or just a thread in the current Employment subforum should be adequate.

On that note, I'm a Chemist looking for work :)

  5. Wow that "Statistics show that most jobs are filled by word of mouth" is pretty scary. Every word of mouth job I've ever gotten has turned out to be hell. On the other hand, a lot of jobs I've gotten by applying often and interviewing have proven to be enjoyable and rewarding.
The job I have now took me seven years of testing and applying for.
And I'm thinking the different sub forums aren't necessary either. Besides using the forum EDD has a pretty good job search system and there's Monster too.
My sister was out of work for over a year after the first big El Dorado down sizing. She found a great job just a few miles from where she lived through EDD.

EDD is a great resource. Monster (and other job search engines)... not so much. Although most job seekers allocate a large part of their time online, ironically most employers spend the least of their time online looking for applicants. The bottom line is money - it takes money to sift through the thousands of online resumes and applications (somebody has to do it and they ain?t gonna do it for free) vs. hiring from within the company (i.e. word of mouth, networking). Head hunters and the like also cost money. The quickest, cheapest and least disruptive way of filling a vacancy often isn?t via online options, mass resume sending etc. It takes planning and preparation, time, patience? and good ?ole luck.

    I'm am getting nervous...

I'm a Management Major w/an Associates in Health Care Management and 22 yrs of experience in the field. I have extensive leadership training and have successfully lead teams/projects in the areas of Managed Care, Health Information Mgt, Health Plans and Operation, Fiscal and Human Resources, Accreditation/Compliance Mgt, Process Improvement, Training, and Patient Privacy. I also love motorcycles, beer, women, good cigars, BBQ, MotoGP and Le Tour, MMA and Boxing, Olivia MMmmunn, Jazz, Audio/Video gear, women, mountain biking/road riding, snowboarding, Thai Food, Thai women (all women really), and ummmmm? beer. LOL!! - I'm available to begin in August! :045::patriot:

    Rick,

I agree that a subforum is probably not necessary at this point, however, if you want to start a networking thread in the Employment forum, we can pin it for you so it's always at the top. Or you can just start multiple threads in that forum. Like you said, that forum doesn't see much action anyways. (remember that this new forum has only been around for a couple of months too)

Sorry about you getting laid off bro. Have you thought about taking advantage of the opportunity by taking the longest vacation of your life? You could go overseas and live very cheaply, or even just hit the road on the bike for an indefinite amount of time without the worry of returning to work on Monday?

    You mean 'bikes', right?
Sorry about your work situation, Rick. It definitely is a tough job market right now. The firm I work for currently has 19 office employees. Two years ago it had over 100. But I work in land development and right now you can hear the crickets chirping.
